Stages 2014 Summer Theatre Camp

Camps are open to all levels of experience. 

Performers in Grades 1 – 10 are immersed in an intense, fun endeavor to create a show using teamwork while expanding their skills in singing, dancing, and acting! 

Each camp session culminates in full performances.  A limited amount of needs-based tuition assistance is available. 

Camps are filled on a first come, first served basis.

MUSICAL THEATRE LIVE AT STAGES!
A camp designed for performers who want to spend a week improving musical theater skills to demonstrate at a STAGES Showcase.  Focus on your technique for singing, acting and dancing.  Learn to develop your character to become a more diverse and dynamic performer.  Enjoy a supportive, encouraging environment to explore your creativity and talents; and to increase your self confidence for auditions and being on stage.   All technique and performance material will be age appropriate and fun.  There will be opportunities to perform featured numbers and small to large group numbers during the last class at the STAGES Showcase.  Both camps are directed by Jeff Salisbury and Anastasia Pembrook.

About the Directors:
Jeff Salisbury
Jeff is a graduate of New York City’s Pace University, where he earned a BFA in Musical Theatre.  He also studied at the Eastman School of Music under Derrick Smith and Patricia Alexander.   While living in New York he signed with Avalon Artist Group and became a member of Actors’ Equity Association (AEA). His NY credits include “Carousel,” “All Shock Up,” and “Dance Outloud.”  He has appeared in several Geva Theater productions such as “Dames at Sea,” “A Chorus Line,” and “Music Man.”  Other regional credits include “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” “Dracula,” “Steel Pier” and “Oliver.”  This past summer he starred in Kodak Alaris’s  ”Orchestrate Your Data” web commercial and was the lead actor in the film “Nature.”  Jeff has toured with several bands including East Coast Connection, and The Monkey Scream Project as their lead pianist.  He is currently writing soundtracks for a number of Independent films.  This past Fall, Jeff choreographed the musical “Dr. Dolittle” at STAGES.  Jeff brings his enthusiasm and passion to his classes and is looking forward to working with STAGES. 

Anastasia Pembrook
Anastasia is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major, with a dance minor, at Nazareth College.  Since fourth grade she has performed in many shows around Rochester.  Her favorite roles have been in Young Frankenstein, Funny Girl and Producers at JCC CenterStage; Fastrada in Pippin, Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods; Maizie in The Boyfriend, and Gertrude in Seussical.   

Anastasia has choreographed extensively for kids theater camps and organized birthday parties for kids at the Little Gym.   For five years she has choreographed summer theater camp shows at A Magical Journey Thru Stages, including Pirates of Penzance, Jr., Little Mermaid, Jr., Aladdin, Kids., Alice In Wonderland, Jr., and  Jungle Book, Kids, among others.    She has also choreographed shows for other theater company’s, including Beauty and the Beast, Jr. and Little Mermaid, Jr.    

She enjoys working with kids who are new to theater, as well as those who already feel the thrill of performing.   It is great fun to explore and develop the natural talents of  kids.   Anastasia loves sharing her passion for theater and watching the kids shine on stage.

August 16 (Saturday) 9AM – 4:30PM  Includes a complimentary ticket to attend the Hairspray, Jr. DAY camp performance.  Meet and greet with DAY Cast until 4:30 pickup.

The Story:
Good morning, Baltimore!  It’s 1962, and spunky plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has one big dream – to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show.  When she finally gets her shot, she’s transformed from social outcast to sudden star.  In balancing her new-found power with her desire for justice, Tracy fights to dethrone the reigning Miss Teen Hairspray, Amber von Tussle, and integrate a TV network in the process.  With the help of her outsized mom, Edna, and guest DJ Motormouth Maybelle, the rhythm of Tracy’s new beat just might prove unstoppable.  

Hairspray, JR., based on the film and hit stage musical of the same name — winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

About the Director:
John has been teaching, directing and performing in Rochester since he moved here in 1996.  He is a regular performer with Nuts & Bolts Comedy Improv, Out of the Box Improv, and Joey and Maria’s Comedy Wedding with Great Lakes Productions. John has been featured in productions performing in Montreal, Milwaukee, Las Vegas and New York City.  During the day John is an instructor of Computer Science and Acting at St. John Fisher College where he was recently involved in a series of Tennessee Williams One Acts.  His greatest joy is working with children in theatre. He runs several summer theatre camps as well as his own studio, Spotlight Studios in Fairport. He can be found directing high school and middle school productions in Greece, Gananda, Wayne and Pittsford. He teaches piano, drama coaching and works with Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups on earning theatre badges.  John dedicates all his work to his parents who are forever an inspiration to him, especially his mom who never missed a show John was in.

Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, JR.

The Story:
Travel down the rabbit hole and join Alice’s madcap adventures in Wonderland as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game!  Roles are plentiful, including three Cheshire Cats and dozens of other wonderfully wacky characters.  

Disney’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND, JR. is a fast-paced stage adaptation of the timeless film, featuring updated dialogue and new arrangements of such classic Disney songs as “I’m Late,” “The Un-birthday Song” and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.”

About the Director:
Misty has been involved in music and theater for over 30 years. She has been teaching children music for more than 20 years.  She taught a home school chorus with the Training Ground and currently teaches private voice and piano lessons.  Her STAGES credits as musical director include Pippin, Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr., and Guys and Dolls.  She has directed summer camps for several years at STAGES and at other community venues.  She is the President and Artistic/Creative Director for Next Generation Theatre, Inc. In her spare time she home educates the younger 5 of her 8 children; as 3 are now college students.  Misty will also direct a STAGES Kids show in Fall 2014 (Title TBA) for students in Grades 2 – 5.

The Story:
What’s a cat to do? In Disney’s THE ARISTOCATS KIDS, Madame’s jealous butler Edgar cat-naps Duchess and her Aristokittens and abandons them in the Parisian countryside. Luckily, Thomas O’Malley and his rag-tag bunch of alley cats come to their rescue! The show, based on the Disney film, features plenty of exuberant group numbers sure to get the audiences tapping their feet to its upbeat, jazzy beat with a score that includes the Disney favorites “The Aristocats,” “Scales and Arpeggios” and “Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat.”

About the Director:
Tina Crandall-Gommel comes to STAGES with a diverse background.  She has a BA in Theatre and Dance from the University at Buffalo and a Masters in Education from Grand Canyon University.  Tina has been a dance teacher for many years, currently teaching tap, jazz, and musical theatre at Performance Plus Dance in Hilton.  Tina joined the STAGES family this past summer costuming 101 Dalmations and Wizard of Oz.  She recently choreographed STAGES production of Into the Woods.  You may have also seen her perform this past fall in Lake Plains Players production of Les Miserables.  When not on stage or working behind the scenes on a show, she enjoys spending time with her family (who are also theatrically inclined), hiking, and caring for the endless unwanted pets that make their way into her home.
